Hubert & Maple: A Tale of Two Friends
A 12 hour story book by Adam Miemiec
The goal of this project was to write and illustrate an 8-12 page story book revolving around a childhood proverbial proverb.
The proverb I chose was "A friend in need is a friend indeed"
A friend in need is a friend indeed
Hubert and Maple follows the story of an old man (Hubert) who lives all alone in the woods. Hubert is very lonely and desperately wishes for a friend. One day, when walking all alone in the woods, Hubert encounters a tiny fox (Maple). The fox, clearly lost and very cold, welcomes Hubert and follows him home. Hubert and Maple develop a strong friendship and go on to have the most wonderful adventures together.
Planning and illustration inspiration
Hubert and Maple follows an archetypal hand drawn children's illustration style. I have been largely inspired by Quentin Blake and his free form style of drawing seen on the covers of books such as Matilda and The Big Friendly Giant. Books such as the Gruffalo have also serbe
Hubert's design has been largely based off my own grandfather. I have taken reference images and used those photographs as a starting point for the design of Hubert. To emulate a memorable style of drawing I have;
-Emphasized features that highlight character personality
-Simplified shapes and form
-Recreated expression with
The process
Hubert and Maple are first drawn on standard A4 paper using pencils and then traced over with black fineliners of varying density. Following initial sketching Hubert and Maple are then scanned with a printer into Photoshop where they are then digitally coloured using water colour brushes.
